Jena. To enable multicellular life, cells must make decisions regarding their fate. These decisions are fundamental to development and homeostasis and can deteriorate with age.
Genomic data from single cells provide high-resolution insights into the state and fate of cells. “Despite great promise, we have yet to harness these information to understand cell fate decisions in development and aging”, explains MacLean. Additionally, there is limited understanding of how gene regulatory networks control these decisions.
Adam MacLean will present recent work from his research team on modeling cell fate decisions in hematopoietic stem cells. In addition, he will explain how his group has discovered that early-life events (mutation, transcription and epigenetics) can influence the function of stem cells in old age. This knowledge could be used to prevent the onset of age-related diseases.
