The FLI provides an international and dynamic research environment with highly interacting groups. A major focus of our lab is on a particular disease-associated gene, namely the Wilms tumor suppressor gene Wt1. The latter encodes a zinc finger transcription factor that is crucial for the development of several organs in mammals, including the kidneys, gonads, heart etc. We have recently discovered additional functions of Wt1 in the central nervous system and in the control of fertility.
To explore Wt1’s different activities we are using the zebrafish as well as the mouse as animal models. Currently, we are looking for a motivated PhD student to work on the further elucidation of Wt1’s functions in development and disease in one of the animal models.
